Born and raised in China, Dr. Z started his martial arts training with his grandfather at the age of 5. As a teenager, he grew up practicing Tai Chi Chuan, Wing Chun, Choy Li Fat, Northern Shaolin and was a NCAA boxer in college.

After he moved to the United States, he started his Jeet Kune Do training in 1982 under the tutelage of two of Bruce Lee’s first generation JKD masters - Sifu Dan Inosanto (‘82-’89, IMB Academy, Torrance) and Sifu Ted Wong (‘82-’92, Monterey Park), where he was also a former classmate of the late Brandon Lee. He is knowledgeable in both original JKD and JKD concepts and has also fought full contact bouts out of the Jet Center.

Dr. Z is also trained in the medical arts and has been the personal doctor of Master Eric Lee, Professor Toru Tanaka, Grand Master Sin Kwan Thé and Grand Master Ed Parker.

After attending UCLA film school classes for most of 90s, Dr. Z decided to take on the task of continuing the art and legacy of Jeet Kune Do movies that were originated by the founder and Grand Master Bruce Lee. He started a film company called Reel Asian Films and has successfully produced thirteen feature films to date.

In addition to training, Dr. Z has also served as a JKD instructor for close to 30 years establishing academies in both Los Angeles and San Francisco. He still enjoys sharing his knowledge on both the training and philosophies of Jeet Kune Do.
